...Since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.
Patience?... Endurance?... Together? I think that I'm a pretty patient person. Usually, with 4 kids and a spouse, I am waiting for my turn to sit down and eat or even have a 2 minute potty break. However, when it comes to waiting days or even months for something, my patience tends to run thin. So patience and endurance, hand in hand, is something I find hard to grasp.
When we first arrived in America, we had little to show for 10 years of being in the mission field. We had 9 bags, 3 guitars, 2 car seats and 7 carry-ons as our only possessions... we knew we were starting afresh but we had no idea that God had so many lessons in store for us.
The faith step in leaving Australia was huge for us. We would be leaving the only place our children knew as home, our furniture, car, and some financial income... it was a faith step indeed! It only meant that when we started new, we had the opportunity to seek God on providing. We were excited!
Then a few weeks passed. Then a few months... before we knew it, it was 5 months later and still had not much more than what we came with. Still no home or car... my patience was wearing thin. I knew that God had spoken that He was going to provide, yet my endurance was weak... and I knew it!
I literally cried out to Lord to give me the strength to keep my faith strong. My heart expressed not only desperation but true thanksgiving as I recognized that even though I was without, He has not stopped speaking to me and that is all I really needed. AND because of His gracious nature, he not only gave me the strength that I needed but he also showed his awesome provision to us!
The home we were lacking? He provided! The car we were needing? He provided!
Why am I sharing this? Well, I just want to remind not only myself, but you too, that:
Firstly, we don't have to have it all together. We are far from having it together, but we are willing to take those steps of faith as he calls us - no matter how big or small they seem.
Secondly, that there is a reason why patience, endurance and thankfulness are partnered together. It REALLY does qualify us and help us understand the depths of His work in our lives and for HIS kingdom.
Most importantly I shared this to remind ME and you of how FAITHFUL our God really is. He is our Provider, our Strength, our Hope and our Peace!! He is the author and perfecter of our faith!
