End of 2015 Update

As we end 2015, you can reflect on the year in two ways... You can look at it in the "would have, should have, could have" way OR the "this, that, and the other thing happened" way. Both are very clear windows into how we choose to start this next year.  Not one of these ways are better than the other... Both can be equally motivating and disillusioning, bringing up many victories and disappointments, revealing the deepest states of our heart.  My question to you today is, 'what does your heart look like after 2015?"...

Update. April 22nd 2016

Since its been about 6 months since my last update regarding our fundraising efforts, I'd thought I would update on our progress. We have actually seen quite a lot of transition within our support team. Some long-term supporters have needed to stop or decrease due to family changes and going into full-time missions. We celebrate with these dear friends. On the positive side we have seen new people join our team, we are grateful for your partnership and trust. While I did approach a handful of you, many of you reached out to me wanting to know our needs and offering to help. This was such a blessing and a huge encouragement to us.

Cold, Hard Numbers. (My wife hates numbers so she made some pretty graphics to illustrate the details)

We needed to adjust our end goal due to increased expenses, our rent was increased although it is still not outrageous compared to some. :) Our annual budget for our family in ministry is:

$103,776

We currently receive $2,495 in committed monthly or regular amounts. This makes up $29,940 or 29% of our annual budget.

We currently receive $22,500 in committed annual donations, this makes up 22% of our annual budget.

Last year we received $36,425 in one-off gifts or responses to a shortfall or immediate need. This amount made up 35% of our budget.

Room for growth.
You will see overall last year we saw approximately 86% of our budget raised. This meant we were unable to put away any savings and scraped through the year.

Our first goal is to have 80% or more of our budget covered by committed regular donors, monthly or annually.

Our second goal would enable us to be in a position to own a home here in San Jose. We are believing God to release a home in His timing. Would you believe with us too?

Thank You for all of you who sow into our family in ministry. We cannot do it without you.

If you would like to commit to a regular amount even an annual commitment helps me to plan a little and focus on our work a little more. We would be so grateful. Even a little bit goes a long way.

Blessings,

Luke

Original Post

Hi there!

Well, since you you are reading this, I would love to give you a bit of background on us...

Since our big move over to California in 2009, we believe God has been leading, guiding, directing and journeying with us to establish a YWAM ministry center here in San Jose (YWAM Ember Ink). This endeavor, with our family driving it, has a heart to see people be connected to the love of Jesus, respond to Him and see transformation in individuals, communities and culture. We are able to see this become a reality through the various schools, programs, projects, events and outreaches we initiate, all from the YWAM Ember Ink family.

Our progress so far...
On our journey to this point we have been able set down what we believe are significant markers. Over the past 5 years we have been able to carve out a niche in ministry where we live in San Jose. We have also seen a growing network of relationships, both supporters and volunteers, join us over our first few years of ministry.

A rough timeline...

What is next...
Our next goal is to establish a platform to carry the future years and endeavors of YWAM Ember Ink, to train young people and birth new and effective ministries so more people are reached and touched by the love of Jesus. We believe that people primarily receive and know the love of Jesus through ‘us’, God’s children, and with this in mind we will actively continue to pursue and direct our efforts in this manner with an emphasis on relational ministry and hands on training.

The next Discipleship Training School is scheduled the fall of 2016.

Our Heart...
We are so grateful for the support and love poured out on us over these past 5 years. It is our joy to pass the love of Jesus along to the children, youth and families God has brought across our path. It is our desire and choosing to continue to build and grow what God has begun and to do this we are focusing our efforts over this next year in particular to establish and build His work in us and here in San Jose .

If you can imagine a mountain climber, she exerts a significant amount of effort to reach the summit. Along the way there will be several markers where she will halt, secure a stake or maybe even a small camp to rest up so she can continue the trek.

We believe at this point we, as a family and ministry are doing just that. After 5 years of perseverance and trekking we have seen God place us in a position where we have a stake in the ground as a ministry.

For us to continue to ‘Hold On’ to our stake in the ground we need your help. We cannot do it alone. This has been a bit of a battle cry for us this 'cannot do it alone'.

In this next season Angela and I believe to continue to ‘Hold On’ and secure these stakes as well as strengthen our core team to put us in a position to grow and thrive.

Will you partner with us? Will you partner with the vision and ministry we are currently doing here in San Jose?

Our Needs - As full-time workers within YWAM, we practice a life of dependance upon God for financial provision and we realize that comes primarily through His people. Not one person in YWAM is a paid employee, every person is responsible to raise their own finances.  This is a strong value for us as we try to live a life of community interdependance... please read more about it here.

You partnership will go towards our salary for the work we do as a part of Youth With A Mission. Our family Budget is $95,000 per year. This amount takes care of all of our living expenses and expenses related to our involvement with YWAM. We currently receive 40% of our salary in regular commitments with the rest coming through various one-off donations. Would you consider helping us get closer to our goal?

(Update 12/27/15) Over the last 2 months we are now up to 62% of our annual income!! Thank You, please keep us in your prayers!

We have been faithfully praying that God will highlight mission-minded people that would be happy to invest into us as the people spearheading this ministry here in San Jose... Is that you?

Ways to respond. Be a part of our team.

Donate.
We would welcome either a once off or monthly donation, to make a gift please click through to this site.  (Ideally, we'd love to have a stronger regular monthly income as each influx of bills come in.)

Stay in touch.
To sign up to receive our regular updates and needs please enter your email below.

Get the word out.
Would you consider sharing this need with someone who may be interested in donating? Maybe you have a small group or even a family member who would consider coming alongside our mission...

We are grateful for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Luke and Angela Haythorpe

Be still my heart...

In about 3 days I'll be letting my eldest child embark on her first solo missions trip without me or Luke. This is truly a test of how much I really believe that I am merely a care taker of this precious child.

She is so sweet and innocent. She is bold and loves Jesus. What more could I ask for?

At age 11, I see her beginning to regularly exercise her own faith... not off the coat-tails of mom and dad's faith, but her OWN faith! I wonder what beautiful things will be birthed in that sweet heart of hers.

I remember being 11 years old, sitting in the church congregation when a missionary from Africa was the guest speaker. She spoke of her journeys, challenges and heart and I heard that small intimate voice inside calling me (young, 11 year old ME) to be a missionary. What a glorious thing to truly know that age does not matter in the Kingdom! BOTTOM LINE - He wants to capture our hearts so we will pursue His. How much more powerful to begin at a young age?!

So today, I choose to push any fear and anxiety away. I ask for you to join with me in praying for the future of this young woman stepping out in faith, learning about her King and walking toward Him. Stand and contend with me against harm, physical and spiritual. Pray for this momma whose heart is tender and still very human. Pray strength, hope and truth over me as I trust a little deeper in the Lord.

I know God sees her MORE precious than I could ever know or express, so I'll take a leaf out of Joy's book and exercise my faith in a new way and trust the one who has all of us in His hands.

Thank you for praying!

Hi Friends,

THIS Friday is the day when our team heads out to Honduras!  I'm feeling very excited about going to Honduras myself. Its just a few days! I'm the only youth who is going without parents so I feel like I'm growing up.

I am still trying to get money in for my trip. If you want drawing, hurry before I leave! You will need to order no later than 3pm TOMORROW! I am trying to get all the money I can to go.

Right now, I have $920 toward my trip. I'm almost at my $1500 goal!

If you have pledged, please don't forget!

Thank you for supporting me.

Joy is heading to Honduras!

Dear Fellow Supporters,

I have exciting news! On the 9th of October, I will be leaving on a missions trip to Honduras. This will be my first missions trip alone, without my family.

I will be going to Honduras with my church. Over there, we show God's love through serving a local church with their kids program and Vacation Bible School. The purpose why I want to go is to serve with their kids program. We will serve around 70 to 100 kids everyday.  We will serve the children by washing the little ones, feeding them, doing their hair, get an outfit with shoes for them, give them water, tutoring, Bible classes, and more. My church has been serving with VBS over the past 10 years and I want to be a part of that. I am trying to fund-raise $1,500 for my trip.

I am selling drawings to raise my funds. If you just want to give me money, that will be fine too. But if you want a drawing, please email your request to me and I will send it to you.☺

1 drawing - suggested donation of $20
2 drawings - suggested donation of  $40
3 drawings - suggested donation of $50
5 drawings - suggested donation of $100

ALL DRAWINGS ARE 8.5x11inches

Always Faithful.

On Monday night we gathered to pray as a family. We shared where we were at with the kids as well as what we believe God was speaking about Mom and Dad going to Australia for YWAM Together.

They shared their hearts, we shared ours. They shared their fears, we prayed together, standing together as a family in unity. Because, this isn't just Mom's call or Dad's call. God called ALL of us, as a family to this kinda life. Sure, one day they will leave on their own adventure but for now we are a unit. One.

As we prayed we got words together. God gave Kindi a picture of a rake. Joy then shared that she saw God use that rake to gather all the leaves into one big pile. The picture is such a snapshot of what we believe God is doing with us in this season, raking us back into the pile, refreshing us and renewing our hope in him.

The other thing I proposed and shared with our family is that God desires for us to be generous. I recently had an email from another family in missions that were trying to get to the conference too. So, in obedience to Jesus, we emptied our account as we had a sense that this was a pre-emptive tithe. We were meant to tithe on money we hadn't received yet! So cool. And kinda fun. Such a release came as we sensed that Jesus was in this. Logic would say, 'WHY!' Faith would say, 'YES!' I'm not bashing logic, we try and use it at all times, but faith comes first.

As we slept last night we received HALF of what we needed to go. Super encouraging, but I had a clear word to not proceed buying anything until we had the full amount. I've also been letting go of things like judging, cynicism, these traits had crept in my heart and I know God was using the vulnerable place we have been in to deal with my heart.

This morning some dear friends who are so supportive and like-minded had a sense to cover the remaining difference with what does not come in by lunchtime tomorrow (Wed). Now, I really don't want them to cover it, but they are ridiculous, faith-filled people who have been a constant encouragement to us through the years. In fact, Angela was staying with them when we heard the call to leave our life as we knew it and step our of the boat. It just all is so meaningful and significant.

They enjoy the adventure of seeing God provide in every area of their lives. It would be sacrificial, but when sacrifice is tied to obedience and love, well, we all know how that plays out. The greatest act of all time was when Jesus, through obedience and love, sacrificed his life for ours.

I just booked our tickets. Thanks for your prayers and standing with us. Love you all.

Lets not put God in a box. He is everything.

Luke and Angela

I have always loved creative writing but high school was a long time ago so I'm going to try and arrange my thoughts in a way I hope you will hear the heart of what I'm learning from the Lord. It really is outward processing, so please bear with me, I've been on a journey of making my life more transparent :)

I had a bit of a moment today. A really deep moment where I felt something rearrange really deep within me. Some context: Be careful what you ask God for, His response usually cuts to the heart as opposed to merely fulfilling your expected answer. So anyways, I have been asking God for more perspective, for more transformation within me as we have been in this season of rest and little activity. During this time He has been faithful in bringing up junk, unforgiveness, and other stuff to the surface. It has honestly been great. I can't remember the last time I've felt such heart surgery than I have these past few months.

I am really desperate today. In prayer yesterday Angela and I had taken some time to come back to the Lord and ask if we should keep believing to go to Australia next week. We are needing to see around $9000 released to cover our rent and bill obligations as well as all the travel costs associate with the trip. As we took time to pray I heard an overwhelming 'Yes' in my spirit and an encouragement to not lose heart. There was a catch, I wasn't really sure what it was at the time, but the only thing I felt sure of with the feeling was it was related to trust. But, I wasn't really sure about where to go with it other than felt a real desire to spend some extra time in prayer over the next little while.

This morning Angela and I began our hour-long route to take the kids to school, it took extra long as today is garbage pick-up day... garbage trucks on, what felt like, EVERY corner. This fact combined with having a warm, sweaty child glued to me while I slept equalled a fairly grouchy Luke.

Anyways, after the final child had been deposited to school, we started sharing a little of what we felt like God was speaking to us. I was my usually incoherent, passionate self, muttering words which did not make sense, especially before I had a chance to drink some caffeine. If it comes as a surprise to you, I'm sorry, but we are not a picture perfect family. We are a real hot-mess, especially in the mornings. Sometimes I get it right and the house is spotless, kids are chirpy and I make coffee before I leave, usually a cool 50% of the time. Today however, everyone seemed to have their bad day all at once.

As we talked we were able to get to God's heart for us, it came swiftly, with no arguing, just surrender. And the thing that hit hard was the reality that He wants the Glory. HE wants the Glory in every part of our lives. He is jealous for us. He began highlighting many different instances over the past period of time where through our own insecurity or cleverness had said things to people, lack of gratefulness, etc how I have been robbing God from receiving all the glory from His call on our lives.

It hit home like a sledgehammer busting a wall open. I found myself weeping as I realized how tightly I had gripped my life and decisions for fear of losing control, losing my reputation, losing grasp of my expectations, wished and wants. It is shocking how subtly pride establishes itself in our lives sometimes, isn't it?

I was reading the story of Gideon the other day (Judges 6) and noticed one of the first things God had Gideon do after he had made an alter of sacrifice to the Lord was pull down the idol which was in the center of town. He first stated the big picture (Deliver Israel), then he was clear to remove the idol.

I felt God speak to me what I needed to do. Pull down the idol of self-reliance which had turned into a puffed up view of my abilities. He has not been unclear with us about the big picture and purpose of why we are here in San Jose, its just that He is pulling away and uprooting the things that oppose Him. Sometimes we love to look outward with these things, issues of society etc, but He is MOST concerned with the state of our hearts and true transformation in society comes form individuals coming alive in the Kingdom of God.

The reality I saw today was, the only reason I can do ANYTHING is because of Christ in me, teaching me to be my best self. It is so freeing, releasing the pressure I had placed on myself, my family, our ministry and embracing the freedom of walking intimately with Him one day at a time.

So, here's what I am going to do. Walk in gratefulness for how He is our provider and leader. Identify and thank Him for ALL He has done and will do. I am going to rest in His presence and trust Him to work out all things for good.

I hope my hot-mess is encouraging to you today. I pray for peace to flood over you in every circumstance you face today, I pray you will know you are NOT alone fighting. That you will know God is REAL, cares deeply for you and will make a way.

Jesus + Nothing = Everything.

Much Love,

Luke

Now that we've had a lot of time to wade through this challenging season we have finally found that I have what is called 'Adrenal Fatigue'. It hit hardest when I HAD to nap every few hours just to function every day. It was particularly challenging for me as my natural makeup is to just KEEP GOING until things are finished.... Now that I have had a FORCED time of slowing down, I have started to breath and assess what is going on.

I do feel a bit better but I more feel SUPER challenged. Our Gracious, Compassionate, Loving Father is so incredibly good to stop us when He knows we need it. These last few months I have gotten humbled, lovingly rebuked and sweetly cared for as I have let go and let God take the reigns once again. I have had the challenge of laying down a lot of the things that I would single-handedly undertake to using my time in a more intentional way.

Ugh. Control is an ugly and subtle thing. I don't know when I took the word of the Lord and decided that it was my job to do it all. All I know is that whenever that happened, what I found my heart was REALLY saying was "I don't trust you Lord to complete the work you've spoken into being". In the midst of it, my pride continued to push its way in and justify it all BUT God in all of His incredible Glory helps us to recognize these ugly things and cut it off.

And its AMAZING what things you hear as you begin to walk in freedom... I really had a sense that he was speaking: RESTORE, RECRUIT, REBOOT.

RESTORE: I/we have intentionally placed ourselves in a position to be restored right now. As we have slowed things down a bit, God has been so good to provide encouragement and refreshment in bits and pieces. For example, we were just at our annual YWAM Bay Area Staff Retreat and were prayed for and loved on. It was very refreshing. We know that we need a continued Spiritual, physical, marriage, family, and financial restoration... especially in this season.

Luke and I are still holding on to the possibility of us two being released to go to Australia next week. We still need to see some significant financing to come in for that. However, we do have the kids looked after and accommodation sorted which were 2 big things to organize.

RECRUIT: We have also talked about gathering LEADERS around us to help us out. So we will spend some time recruiting as we plan a bit of a full-reboot in the spring.

REBOOT: We are currently inviting people back sometime in the spring to help us get ready for the next DTS and help develop Youth Street. We are already seeing the Lord orchestrate some conversations with solid people.

If you would have asked me about slowing things down 7 or 8 months ago I would have shut you down. In my mind, we just needed a bit of elbow grease and pinch of perseverance. However, NOW as a beautifully broken person, I am happily welcoming the Holy Spirit restore my Spirit. My hope and intention is to walk into this next season in His Spirit. This ministry is God’s baby. It always has been. I don’t need to take control. He is in control. I just need to move in conviction as He speaks... and right now, that is to be restored.

If you are tired today... if you are discouraged... find that place, that special place where you can just spend time with Him. Logically it may feel counterproductive but when your Spirit is ignited with the passion and love of Jesus... IT RESTORES YOUR SOUL and you will move mountains! Go be with Him today.

- Angela

Jesus leads us to be together.

Hi!

I've been reflecting recently on how blessed we've been as a family through the different seasons of our journey of beginning YWAM in San Jose. Wherever we have gone, it seems like people have been placed in our path at each turn to encourage, nourish and challenge us as we face life. We are so grateful for all of your faithful help along the way. We had a great chance to catch up with some dear friends this week who have been supporting us through it all. We were so touched by their affirmation and encouragement. Seriously felt like a fresh gust of wind in our sails.

We returned this week from 4 days in the redwoods at our annual YWAM Bay Area Staff Retreat....

The Good, The Bad & The Lovely

A Real and Raw Update on How things are going

So I guess I can start with the "Lovely". A couple days ago, Luke and I celebrated our 14th anniversary. It was a great time of reflecting as we looked back on the years and identified where God has grown and guided us and discussed and dreamed about whats ahead. I am thankful for this crazy partner of mine. I may be biased, but I think we make a good team. ;) We had a very late night dinner after serving an evening Vacation Bible School. Obviously, we are still young at heart.

LOVING THE WASHINGTON NEIGHBORHOOD

“A new command I give you: Love one another.
As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
John 13:34-35

Can you believe...

As we look back over the last 3 years, it is AMAZING (to say the least) how good God is! Just to recap:

  • We were praying for a home downtown...
    • we not only got one for us as a family but a ministry house too!!
    •
  • We landed in an incredible neighborhood in which God imparted His heart for it immediately.
  • We heard a word from the Lord to start a Youth Ministry in the neighborhood...

Hi

I hope you are finding joy where you are at today. I have had to dig for it, maybe thats why I named one of my children Joyous, a constant reminder that life can be lived differently, we don't have to let the hard things get us down but we can learn to find joy and celebrate the little things. These past few months have been so enjoyable for us. I guess I went into it maybe dreading it, we were tired, a little (or a lot) overwhelmed and a little unsure of how to handle all of the responsibilities and pressures we were feeling.

As we took time to focus on what we felt like was important to us....

Full of Joy! February 2015 Update

http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=47f57b3c3751d07f0ca2ed0fe&id=08d3374461
